About Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Deep beneath the Earth lie 119 caves that comprise Carlsbad Caverns National Park. These caves were formed thousands of years ago when sulfuric acid dissolved layers and layers of limestone, creating numerous caverns of all shapes and sizes. Above the network of caverns, the Chihuahuan Desert awaits to greet visitors with views of ancient high sea ledges, deep rocky canyons, flowering cacti and abundant desert wildlife.
In the Carlsbad Caverns, there is a large cave chamber (The Big Room)- which is a natural limestone chamber that’s almost 4,000 feet long, 625 wide, and 255 feet high at the chamber’s highest point. Located in New Mexico, this is the fifth largest chamber in North America and the twenty-eighth largest in the world.
